In May 2009 Joyce & Michael decided to have a six week holiday, the following year, visiting family and friends in the USA and Britain. As plans for the trip became real it became obvious that almost all the people they were going to be staying with had interesting and thoughtful things to say about the state of faming today. Things that should be recorded and which would tell an important, useful story. They approached their good friend Fred Harden, photo journalist and film maker and asked him if he and his wife Jan would like to come along and film the the places and people they were planning to visit.
Of course new venues were added to an already full itinerary and the six weeks travelling became a fully packed adventure. It is now a year since we travelled and after a busy summer we are hunkering down to make sense of all the film recordings that we made.
The original aim of this website was simply to present what we did together with edited clips and photographs, however, what we have realised is that not only do we need to document the problem of ‘Growing the Growers’ but we must also use what we have learned and actually do something to help new growers in Australia. So we are starting here by offering to list established farmers who are willing to take on interns and we are also offering to help school gardens with good tools, equipment and planning advice for production rather than domestic gardens.
